REMINDER
Monday 10/03/2014 PUBLIC HOLIDAY – NO SCHOOL

From the Principal
School Council Elections
We had three parents and one teacher nominate for the school council election this year. The number of nominees equalled the number of vacancies on council; so no election was required.
The successful parent candidates are: Melanie McGrath (re-nominated for another term), Mel Alexander, Adam Palmer & Mulynda Blease as the staff representative. We would like to congratulate the candidates for nominating and volunteering for these important roles, which are so important to the school, the community and especially the students.
Secondly we would like to acknowledge the work of our retiring councillors; Andy Higgins and Andy Stewart. Their commitment to making Newlands PS a better school through the use of their relevant skills and knowledge will be built upon as we continue to evolve and improve as a school community.

CPR Training
Annually all staff must complete a CPR update as part of their teacher duty of care requirements. This year we are providing a limited number of places to our parent community. The training has been booked for Monday 24/03/2014; this will be confirmed and advertised in next week’s newsletter.

Parent-Teacher Meetings
A parent/teacher meeting has been organised for this term. This is an opportunity to meet with the teacher ‘briefly’ to discuss how your child is going and for parents to share relevant information with the teacher.
Due to time constraints we need to keep each meeting to TEN MINUTES in duration. We realise the meeting time is limited, so if parents require a longer meeting then we would ask that they make an appointment with the relevant teacher on another day that is mutually acceptable for both parties.

Booking a Parent-Teacher Meeting Time
This year we will be going on-line booking for meeting times; there will be NO paper forms to complete and return to school. Parents will be able to go on-line view the times available select and select the most convenient time. Full information regarding this new process will be sent home in the next newsletter. For those parents who cannot access the internet their bookings can be completed at school through the front office.

UPDATES & NOTICES
Visual Arts News – Please remember to save the lids from your Jalna yoghurt containers and bring them in to school. They will be used in Art Class to make zoetropes. For more information see the visual arts blog: http://visualartsatnewlands.global2.vic.edu.au

Secondhand Uniform Shop
The Parents & Friends Association will be holding a secondhand uniform shop on Tuesday March 11 from 3.00 – 4.00pm out the front of the office. Everything will be cheap, prices ranging from $2.00 to $12.00.
If you have any uniforms you would like to donate please drop them in the basket in the office foyer.

FUNDRAISING
Masters BBQ
We’re still looking to fill some sausage-flipping and people-serving spots for the Masters BBQ on Saturday 29 March. If you can spare an hour or so please let Adrian know or write in your name on the sign up sheet on the noticeboard in the quadrangle.

Easter Raffle
Our second fundraising activity for Term 1 will be an Easter Raffle! Can you donate something to put into a highly sought after Easter Hamper? Easter eggs, Easter gifts, non-perishable foods, or other completely non-related-Easter gift items are all welcome. A box will be set up in the foyer to collect your donations. Raffle tickets will go out soon after and the raffle will be drawn on the last day of Term 1.

Fundraising Committee Kick-Off!
Monday 17th March – 8.00pm – Melanie’s house
Let us show you how much fun fundraising at Newlands can be! Come and share some ideas and some laughs at Melanie’s house – 28 Claremont Street, Coburg North (the street south of the school with the playground on the corner).
It would be great if you could shoot me an email to let me know you’re coming and then if the details change I’ll be able to let you know. We can also arrange for you to rock up with someone else if you’re new to the school and feeling a little daunted.
Hope to see you there – everyone is welcome!
Melanie McGrath
