FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Book Parade
The Book parade will be in the Quadrangle starting at 9.15am. This will coincide with our annual grand-parents day.

Grandparents Day
Grandparents Day this year will coincide with the Book parade. Grandparents will be officially welcomed at 9.15 am. After the book parade grandparents will then join their grandkids in their respective classroom/s until 10.30am. Grandparents will be invited to morning tea in the multi-purpose room. After morning tea at 11.00am the grandkids will join the grandparents to say goodbye.

Student Absentee Process
There has recently been some commentary in the media regarding student absence and the impact this has on student learning outcomes; refer ACER Conference recently held in Melbourne. I thought it would be appropriate to revisit our process on student absence. As part of the schools responsibilities we must register an absence as either approved or unapproved. This basically means an approved absence is one where the school has received a note from the parent explaining the absence. An unapproved absence is one where a child has been absent from school and the school has no record to indicate why the absence occurred. Attached to this newsletter is a copy of our generic absence note template a parent can use to send with your child on their return to school. This template is also available to be downloaded from the ‘School Documentation’ page on our website.

UPDATES & NOTICES

On Monday 25th August at 3.45pm Randy at CERES will be coming to the school to talk to us about the Resource Smart Grant. If you’d like to hear and share ideas about how to embed sustainability in the operations of the school please come along. Everyone is very welcome!

Digital Communications Working Group
Do you have any skills or ideas about how Newlands PS can improve our digital communications (website, online newsletter, blogs, etc)?
School Council is setting up a Digital Communications Working Group to consolidate our digital communications and develop a sustainable management plan for them into the future.
Our aim will be to make recommendations to School Council at the end of the year about platforms and content, processes for maintaining content, and how to integrate existing communication systems from the point of view of both users and administrators.
If you’re interested in getting involved please contact either of us and we’ll start talking about how to get the ball rolling!

FUNDRAISING
WOOLWORTHS BBQ THIS WEEKEND!!!
There will be a market at Coburg Hill this Friday and Saturday. The manager at Woolworths, Jack, has offered us the opportunity to hold a fundraising BBQ.
Woolies will set it up and provide all the things to sell – we just need to cook, sell, and take all the money!
Obviously it’s short notice, but it’s a great opportunity to spread the word about Newlands PS, and raise some money at the same time.
If you can do an hour or two between 11am and 4pm on either Friday or Saturday, please contact me or Caitlyn in the office and at after care.

2014 Comedy Night Working Group
After the awesome success of last year’s inaugural Newlands Comedy Gala, we can’t wait to get planning for this year’s event.
All your energy and ideas are welcome – if you’d like to get involved please let us know, or come along to our first working group meeting on Thursday 28 August, just after drop off (meet at the office).
