From the Principal
Book Parade/Grandparents Day
The Book parade / Grandparent’s Day was a great success. The feedback about the choir, costumes and classroom activities was very positive. I can report that the money raised was over $450! This will go towards purchasing the books for our school library.
Once we have purchased the books we will place a thank you note in each book acknowledging who purchased the book. I would like to thank Maddy and Graeme for all their work with the choir; the kids were fantastic.
On the day we did have an unfortunate accident where Teddy and Maggie’s grandmother tripped and damaged her shoulder; I can report that she is fine and making a full recovery. Thanks to Tristan’s grandparents for their assistance and support to Mrs. Proimos.
Also thanks to the parents and especially Adam (Declan’s dad) for his great work making scones on the day.

Absent Notes
Thanks parents for using the notes to explain your child’s absence. Just by bringing the note this has made a significant difference to our absent reporting process. Extra notes are still available from the office foyer or the school website.

Athletics Years 3 – 6, Friday 5/09/2014
The children will be competing at the local track as part of the District athletics carnival. The children will be competing in a range of track and field events. We ask that children are wearing school uniform; polo top, shorts and a hat. Also they will need snacks, lunch and a water bottle. A further reminder will be sent out next week.

Principal Conference
I will be attending a Principal’s conference next Thursday and Friday. Rae and Sonya will be in charge while I’m attending the conference.

AFL Mathletics Challenge
Taking place during the 2014 Numeracy and Literacy Week (this week), this event gives students the chance to don their favourite AFL team colours and help lead their team to victory!
Students in Grades 3-6 are enrolled and are looking forward to participating in this activity during Numeracy Week. Grade 2 students will have a chance to participate during the Grade 2 transition program on Thursday.
This activity is designed to be fun and involve quality learning. Students will improve their personal bests as they complete Live Mathletics levels and curriculum aligned activities – all while earning points to propel their favourite team to the top of the AFL Maths Challenge ladder.

Digital Communications Working Group
Do you have any skills or ideas about how Newlands PS can improve our digital communications (website, online newsletter, blogs, etc)?
School Council is setting up a Digital Communications Working Group to consolidate our digital communications and develop a sustainable management plan for them into the future.
Our aim will be to make recommendations to School Council at the end of the year about platforms and content, processes for maintaining content, and how to integrate existing communication systems from the point of view of both users and administrators.
If you’re interested in getting involved please contact either of us and we’ll start talking about how to get the ball rolling!

2014 Comedy Night Working Group
After the awesome success of last year’s inaugural Newlands Comedy Gala, we can’t wait to get planning for this year’s event.
All your energy and ideas are welcome – if you’d like to get involved please let us know, or come along to our first working group meeting on Thursday 28 August, just after drop off (meet at the office).

Monster Auction
Dear Parents
The NPS annual “monster auction” will be held at our Comedy Night on Friday November 21 at Preston Town Hall. Last year, our first Comedy Night/monster auction was a fantastic success, a hilarious night out that raised about $7000 for the school. This year we hope it will be even bigger.
The monster auction is a silent auction where auction items are donated by local traders, parents and anyone else we can find! The more items we have to auction, the more money we make for the school. So if you have anything of value you can donate or ask someone else to donate (unwanted gifts, services you can provide, donations from your workplace, donations from kid’s activity providers etc) please either drop it at the office labelled “monster auction” or contact Susie. And if anyone is able to help with a few phone calls or visits to our list of previous donors, that would be really great too.

Term 4 Fundraising at Newlands
When the weather starts getting warmer our little school goes into fundraising overdrive!
Please take a look over the following program of fundraising activities for Term 4 and think about donating some goods, time or energy to our efforts.
Chocolate Drive: chocolates will be sent home early in Term 4 for you to sell to family, friends & colleagues (or just eat them all and give Joy the cash like I do!).

Bunnings BBQ – Saturday October 18
The BBQs make a lot of money and this one will also be a great opportunity to promote the Comedy Gala. Keep an eye out for notice from the PFA calling for volunteers (or email me with your interest).

Newlands Comedy Gala & Monster Auction – Friday 21 November
As well as the people involved with the working group, we will need volunteers on the night. Last year we had a stack of wonderful volunteers which meant no one really needed to spend much more than half an hour on a shift – and we all had a ball.

State Election Fundraiser – Saturday 29 November
Newlands PS is usually a polling booth at the election, which is a great opportunity for us to sell some sausages, coffee and cake and make a little bit more money! If you think you can help out with this, please contact me or anyone at the PFA.

Thank you to Adam and Alex – office bearers of the PFA – for all your efforts in providing hospitality for our visiting grandparents last week. Grandparents Day means such a lot to the kids, and the grandparents seem to really enjoy having the opportunity to visit and share some of their memories and experiences. I’m sure they really appreciated the refreshments and being made to feel so welcome by our Parents & Friends Association and all our staff.
