From the Principal
As a staff we are currently working to develop our grade structure for 2015. We anticipate that the structure will be similar to 2014 – 1 x Foundation, 1 x Year 1, 1x Year 2 (1/2 as we had in 2014), 1x Composite 3/4 and 1x Composite 5/6. Specialist programs will be Music, P.E and Art.
We will continue to provide a differentiated approach to literacy and numeracy learning in 2015, which has been very successful this year. This approach has provided groups of students with targeted and specific teaching based on the needs of the student, as opposed to only delivering general grade level content.
We will be implementing our Spanish bilingual program in the 1/2 teaching team. Although we had expected to offer it at the Foundation level, also, an effective bilingual program requires that both a Spanish-speaking teacher and an English-speaking teacher be allocated to the classroom. Currently our 2015 Foundation enrolments are not at a level to support two teachers.
We are, however, still committed to bilingual language education and will be introducing and developing it as part of the 1/2 grade level for 2015. Students in Foundation, 3/4, and 5/6 will undertake a more traditional LOTE program, with the Spanish teacher providing language instruction in the classroom for a set amount of time each week.
I can confirm that we will have a teacher in place for parents, staff and students to meet before we end the 2014 school year. To celebrate this new direction for Newlands Primary we will be organising a celebration later this term – date and time will be confirmed in the coming weeks.
In the meantime we have organised for the North-West Regional Language Advisor to meet with Newlands parents and provide an insight into what constitutes a contemporary language program in the modern primary classroom.
