ANZAC Commemorations
Last Thursday the whole school was involved in activities that reflected the time in Australia’s history which coincided with Gallipoli. The activity sessions were run by teams of Year 5/6 students right across the school, assisted by classroom teachers. I would like to congratulate Graeme’s grade for being so professional and mature by providing the younger students with an insight into the past.
For learning project like this to be successful it needs to be co-ordinated, and I would like to congratulate Sonya for her efforts in bringing a different perspective to the students around ANZAC Day. I’m sure the kids and teachers enjoyed the activity day and the ANZAC assembly. Some photos are attached.

Prep Enrolment 2016
We are accepting enrolments for 2016. Thank-you to those parents who returned the notice asking for siblings to be registered for 2016. If you haven’t returned the form I would ask you do so soon. Places are filling-up!

Kinder Information Session
On Monday evening Rae attended an information evening at J.S. Grey kinder as a guest speaker. Rae attended and spoke to parents about school readiness. Rae reported that the parent audience was very interested to hear what she had to say and also about Newlands PS. As part of raising our profile Rae will be visiting kinders in the area during this term.

NAPLAN
As mentioned previously students in Years 3 & 5 will be doing the NAPLAN assessment tasks in two weeks. Graeme, Angela and Sonya will be conducting these tasks.

Education Week
This year we are taking a slightly different approach to showcasing our great school to the broader community. This year we have a timetable of activities running during the week to highlight the fantastic programs operating at Newlands. We think this is a good way to really demonstrate to the wider community that Newlands is an excellent school offering innovative opportunities for student learning. Please let your friends know that Newlands is a vibrant learning community with great programs and teachers.

Local School Enrolment Ceiling
Last week I received formal information from North West Regional Office Regional Director, Jeanette Nagorka that both Preston West Primary School and Reservoir West Primary School have an official enrolment ceiling operating. This means that if either of these schools is not the closest school then the child cannot be enrolled there. Further information can be sourced from either schools website.

Angela – 3/4 Teacher
On Monday Angela sent home a letter to her Grade 3/4 parents to explain why she has been absent from school so much in term one and at the beginning of term 2.
Angela has been dealing with a diagnosis of breast cancer; a very big shock for a young vibrant woman to deal with. We are happy to report that she appears to be cancer free, which is fantastic news. To make sure the cancer has been completely eradicated she will need to undergo further treatment involving chemotherapy for three months and then radiotherapy.
As a way of helping her grade understand more fully her condition she will be using a resource to guide the conversation with the class called “Talking to Kids About Cancer” which is published by the Cancer Council. You may want to refer to it if there are questions that are asked at home.
While Angela is happy to answer questions she does ask that you respect her privacy. I would like to add that the staff and myself will fully support Angela over the coming months and I certainly admire her strength and determination at this time.

UPDATES & NOTICES
Newlands Art Exhibition News
The biannual art exhibition will be held on Thursday October 29th (Term 4, week 4).  This exhibition showcases the amazing work created by our talented students and will be a real highlight of this school year.  If anyone is interested in volunteering to help organise this major school event could they please let me know.  There are a number of ways to get involved including helping to mount and frame artwork, prepare the exhibition space, hang the work etc.  A popular part of the last art show was the inclusion of a parent and friends gallery featuring work created by our wonderful school community. If anyone is interested in curating this component I’d love to hear for you.
You can contact me at Newlands on Mondays and Tuesdays or you can email a message to me via the school’s email.

Art Blog
Don’t forget to check out the Art Blog to find out what’s happening in the art room.  The students have been doing clay recently and you will find some photos.

Meeting Reminder – Thursday night
Hi everyone, The new PFA team (see below) would like to remind everyone that our next meeting is to be held on Thursday April 30 from 7.15pm.
The PFA is instrumental in driving a lot of the fundraising for our school. It’s a great way to get to know other parents and also to become more closely involved with school activities.
We would love to see some new faces.
Hope to see you there.

The PFA and Bianca are working together on an activity for Mother’s Day. We need a volunteer to go to Ikea and collect some candles for the project.
